Diabetic retinopathy is one of the leading causes of blindness.Pathogenesis of diabetic retinopathy is not clearly known, but because platelet abnormalities are commonly seen in diabetes, platelet hyperactivity is implicated.Mean platelet volume(MPV) is an indicator of platelet hyperactivity and an easy to perform test as it is a part of complete blood count.

Aim:to determine MPV in diabetics with and without retinopathy and to find association of MPV with various degrees of retinopathy.

Materials and methods:150 diabetics with retinopathy and 150 diabetics without retinopathy were included in the study.detailed history, ophthalmic examination and MPV analysis was done.

Results:MPV was higher in diabetics with retinopathy as compared to diabetics without retinopathy(8.89+/-0.73 vs 8.04+/- 0.78).MPV was higher in PDR group as compared to NPDR group.(p<0.005).No significant difference was noted among NPDR groups. MPV can be used as a simple tool to monitor diabetic retinopathy progression
