Diabetes is a fast growing chronic ailment prevalent in urban and rural India. Devastating effects of diabetic retinopathy is realised at a much later part in the course of the disease. Rural population are treated for diabetes with health care workers on a regular basis in the hospital. Owing to non feasibility of an ophthalmologist to regularly go to rural areas for ophthalmic examination. Fundus photographs of patients are collected using non mydriatic camera. These are collated and brought to a tertiary centre, read by a trained optometrist/ ophthalmologist. Appropriate patients requiring further care are given treatment in a tertiary care unit.
