PURPOSE: To report steroid induced cataract & glaucoma in 2 young adults with vernal keratoconjunctivitis.
MATERIALS & METHODS: A 23 year old male & 25 year old female presented separately with recurrent itching, redness & photophobia with history of intermittent self medication with steroid eye drops. Both had features of vernal keratoconjunctivitis with bilateral posterior subcapsular cataract & bilateral pseudophakia respectively. IOP (OD/OS)male-26/24mm Hg ; female-24/28 mm Hg & BE 0.8-0.9 CD with visual field -advanced glaucomatous damage.
RESULT: Steroid drops were stopped & topical Cyclosporine(0.05%), topical mast cell stabilizer, lubricants & antiglaucoma therapy was started. Clinical improvement with controlled IOP within 3-4 weeks noted.
Injudicious use of corticosteroids should be avoided & when used, follow-up care at regular intervals to monitor ocular condition and intraocular pressure with proper patient counseling done to avoid irreversible visual damage .
