Method: Prospective non randomised study of 60 enucleated eyes of 30 septicemic donors with medical history & blood investigations collected from treating hospitals. Serum Procalcitonin test(PCT) positive with septicemia diagnosed at the time of death were included. At eye bank with sterile techniques Aqueous, vitreous, limbal swab & corneoscleral rim tissue samples inoculated on blood, chocolate & Sabouraud’s agar. Corneal button in MK media examined with Specular microscope.Routine serology done. Results: Blood cultures was positive in 63.3%. No organisms isolated from aqueous vitreous & cornea. Limbal swab 6 eyes (10%) showed positive culture for Staph. epidermidis,a common commensal. Specular microscopy of>1500 cells/mm2 in 66.6%. Ocular fluids did not show positive results for culture. Serum Procalcitonin was positive in all cases indicating active sepsis. Conclusion:Ocular surface & fluids harvested from septicemic donors do not necessarily harbor the pathogenic organisms.
