Purpose : To report about 14 cases of ocular allergy after exposure to hair spray, and color die for hair.
Methods : We have seen 14 cases of young males (15 to 25 years) who developed severe acute hypersensitive reaction to the chemicals (propylene glycol, hydrofluorocarbons & polyvinylpyrrolidone) in sprays they developed Severe periorbital oedma, oedema of lids Conjunctival chamosis with mild pain, congestion, breathing difficulty facial oedema with blurred vision and discomfort. Some patients also showed systemic symptoms.
Treatment given
I.V. Hydrocortisone Inj. 300 mg IM Stat.
Inj. Decodran 40 mg, Inj. Avil IM Stat.
Olopatidine, Prednisilone, Nepafinac Eye drops Every half an Hourly for 6 hrs
All these patients showed good response in 4-6 hrs and complete recovery was seen in 24-48 hrs
Conclusion: Hair spray, Hair coloring die products should be used cautiously to prevent not only ocular allergies but also to save life from death due to laryngeal oedema
