Aim:To explain the role of vision centres(VCs)
Methods:The statistics of 7 VCs under a base hospital(BH) in Theni,Tamil Nadu are elucidated.Patients coming to the VC undergo routine ophthalmic examination by a senior MLOP and get ophthalmologist’s teleconsultation from BH at a low cost.Fundus images are captured through low cost customised unit.Medications and spectacles are given in the VC.Patients requiring speciality workup/surgery are referred to BH.
Results:Each VC is established to serve a minimum of 50,000 population.VCs diagnose,treat various eye diseases,follow-up cases,refer surgery cases,do health promotion,awareness and disease prevention.Diseases requiring immediate intervention and workup are referred to BH.More than 2000 referral surgeries are done and more than 9200 spectacles per year are issued.
Conclusion:VCs save time and money for the patients and are available at the nearest place to the patients.They are effective outreach points for achieving universal coverage.
