Purpose: To investigate the association between thyroid dysfunction and diabetic retinopathy
Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional study included self-reported thyroid cases who had reported to a tertiary eye care centre in the period 2010 to 2015. The type of thyroid condition was documented purely based on the response of the candidate.
Results: A total of 581 self-reported thyroid cases were analysed to assess for a possible relationship between self –reported thyroid cases and diabetic retinopathy.
Conclusion: There is a complex interrelationship between thyroid dysfunction and diabetic retinopathy. Hyperthyroidism impairs glycemic control in diabetic subjects, while hypothyroidism may increase susceptibility to hypoglycemia thus complicating diabetic management. Thyroid dysfunction can increase the prevalence of diabetic retinopathy and its severity. Thus a detailed history taking and retinal examination is needed in subjects with thyroid dysfunction.
