Purpose: To study the role of limbal relaxing incisions (LRI) to reduce preexisting astigmatism in patients implanted with multifocal intraocular lens (MFIOL).
Methods: In a prospective study patients who opted for MF IOL and had preexisting astigmatism between 1D – 2.0D were included in the study. LRI was performed before making cataract incisions as per calculation done with online calculator. Postoperative refraction and biometry was done at one month after the surgery.
Results: Among 36 patients, 19 females and 17 males in the age group of 32-77 (mean 61.39±13.49). Average preexisting and postoperative astigmatism was 1.45±.35D and .65±.46 D (p<0.05). Average refractive spherical equivalent was 0.48±.27D. Uncorrected distance LogMAR visual acuity was.32±.24 and near visual acuity was ≥N6 was achieved in 67%. Conclusions: LRI is effective in reducing moderate amount of astigmatism in patients who are candidates for multifocal IOLs.
