The term “after-cataract” describes growth of lens epithelial cells (LECs) left behind on the lens capsule following cataract removal. These cells proliferate and migrate and finally may cause visual impairment due to pearl formation on, or whitening and shrinkage of the capsule. Nd:YAG laser capsulotomy is a definitive treatment of PCO. This was a 3 year retrospective analytical study. It included patients operated for cataract using phacoemulsification with acrylic, square edge hydrophobic foldable PCIOL. The records of patients were reviewed for post-operative visual acuity, incidence of posterior capsular opacification. The incidence of PCO was not significantly different in the two groups however, anterior capsular phimosis, capsular contraction were significantly lower in the study group. The mean visual acuity was also better in the study group. Polishing is seen to reduce the incidence of capsular contraction and also gives better visual acuity.
