AIM- Efficacy of topical azithromycin 1% w/w ointment in management of evaporative eye disease most commonly due to meibomian gland dysfunction( MGD)
MATERIALS AND METHOD-56 patients with symptomatic dry eye disease due to MGD (M:F=2.5: 1) were studied from NOV 2017 to APR 18. Patients were evaluated under slit lamp. schirmer test( 10+-2) and TBUT(7+-2) readings measured at begining of treatment. All patients were prescribed 1% azithromycin ointment BD & evaluated after 4 weeks.
RESULT-52 pts(92.8%) showed decreased signs and symptoms( e.g conjunctival congestion, stinging and burning sensation of eye and lid. all patients showed increased TBUT (11+_2) and all most unchanged schirmer readings (10+-2). 4 pts(7.2%) complained about burning sensation of eyes after application of ointment.
CONCLUSION- Topical 1% azithromycin ointment improves tear film stability by increasing secretion of meibomian glands and improves symptoms of dry eye disease due to evaporative causes.
