Post-traumatic endophthalmitis is devastating condition.
In this retrospective study, we have evaluated 13 patients with open globe injury, presented to us from Jan 18 to May 18. All patients underwent primary globe repair and were followed-up to 2 months. Visual acuity at the time of presentation was hand movement or less in all patients. 53.84% patients developed endophthalmitis and only 1 patient recovered to 20/200. We injected vancomycin, ceftazidime and voriconazole as empirical therapy and changed as per sensitivity. Five cases were culture positive; 2 had gram+ cocci (Staph. and S. pneumoniae), 1 had gram positive bacilli (B. Cereus), 1 had fungal (Aspergillus) and 1 had mixed infection. Sensitivity showed resistance to ceftazidime in majority of cases. Three patients developed retinal detachment within 2 months.
We found higher prevalence of post traumatic endophthalmitis and the poor visual recovery. Also the sensitivity pattern was different in our set of patients.
