Assessment of quality of life is being increasingly recognized as a critical measure for evaluating the effectiveness of treatment of glaucoma. Use of BAK preserved anti-glaucoma drugs is associated with ocular surface disease and has the propensity to worsen QoL.
Material and methodology: A total of 110 subjects were divided into three groups; the first group comprising of 40 POAG patients receiving BAK preserved prostaglandins, the second group included 40 POAG patients receiving BAK free travoprost and a third group of 30 age matched controls. All the patients were assessed by a single interviewer with orally administered Quality of Life (GQL-15) and Ocular surface disease index (OSDI) questionnaires.
Conclusion: QoL assessed using the GQL 15 questionnaire was found to be significantly better in patients receiving polyquad preserved drugs as compared to BAK preserved drugs.
