Comparing inflammatory biomarkers in type2 DM with(DR), without(NDR) retinopathy &controls. Study comprised of 3 groups DR(66), NDR(33)&controls(33).Detailed work up included HbA1c levels, BMI, hs-CRP, white cell count,ESR. Mean age was 54yrs. Mean duration of DM was 10 & 4yrs in DR & NDR group. The mean hs-CRP values were significantly higher in diabetics(54.12±65.6) than controls(5.16±4.6) irrespective of the status of retinopathy(p 0.00). The significance of this relationship was still maintained after controlling the effect of BMI which is found to be an independent predictor of hs-CRP(p.001).On comparing, the mean ESR values were significantly higher in DR group (30.74) than NDR group (23.39) and least in controls (10.09) (p 0.00). Therefore hs-CRP values showed a correlation with diabetes per se but not with retinopathy however ESR correlated with diabetes, with & without retinopathy as well as its severity.
