A survey was conducted involving 1187 participants (above 25yrs) who came to our opd in April was done. Among the participants 866 were males (73%) and 321 females (27%). A total of 498 participants (42%) were aware about Glaucoma as a disease of the eye. Only 20% (n=237) of them were aware about the risk of familial predisposition to glaucoma. 854 participants (72%) had confusion regarding difference between glaucoma and cataract. Awareness about irreversible nature of vision loss in glaucoma was noted in only 19% of the responses. 486 (41%) knew that glaucoma could be treated. Only 118 (10%) had undergone screening/consulted an ophthalmologist in the past one year. Visit to an eye hospital was most common source of their knowledge ie 37% few were aware because of family member had it (15%). The study findings stress the need to spread awareness about glaucoma for prevention of glaucoma related blindness.
