Purpose: To compare the efficacy and safety of topical interferon alpha 2b (IFNa2b), Mitomycin C (MMC) and 5- Fluorouracil (5-FU) for OSSN.
Methods: Medical records of 66 eyes of 65 patients with primary OSSN were reviewed retrospectively. All were treated with either topical IFNa2b (1 M IU/mL) or MMC (0.4 mg/mL) or 5-FU (1%) 4 times a day. The outcome measure was clinical resolution of tumors along with failure and recurrence rates after treatment.
Results: In all eyes (IFNa2b, 26; MMC, 25; 5-FU, 15), complete response was achieved in 23 (89%), 23 (92%) and 13 (87%) with topical IFNa2b, MMC and 5-FU respectively (P = 0.854, Kruskal wallis test). The median time to lesion resolution was significantly different among the groups (P, 0.001). 7 of 66 patients showed no or partial response to therapies. Adverse effects occurred in (12%, IFNa2b; 88% MMC; 60% 5-FU) (P, 0.001).
Conclusions: All three drops had comparable efficacy. IFNa2b exhibited greater ocular tolerability.
