OBJECTIVE: To study the epidemiology of secondary IOL implantation in pediatric aphakia.
MATERIALS: A retrospective study including all the aphakic children with anterior or posterior chamber lens implantation. All data exported from EMR in tabulated formats and analysed by SPSS 22.
RESULTS: Our study included 64 pediatric patients with mean age 7.9 years, 47(73.43%) male and 17(26.56%) female. We found that secondary lens implantation had improved visual acuity significantly (p=.00) particularly in >5. No significant difference was found with primary surgical technique and location of IOL implanted. Significant difference was found in aphakia of traumatic and non-traumatic etiology and the material of IOL implanted.
CONCLUSION: Pediatric aphakia management with requires meticulous preoperative and postoperative consideration for better visual outcome.
