Purpose-To evaluate the incidence and risk factors in patients diagnosed as primary open angle glaucoma (POAG)
Method- 60 patients attending tertiary care eye OPD in one year and being diagnosed as POAG were included in this study. Detailed history and thorough ocular examinations including visual acuity, refraction, tonometry, ophthalmoscopy, gonioscopy, perimetry, specular microscopy and OCT were done.
Results– Incidence was 0.152% ,mean age was 51.02 ± 13.63 years, 76.67% were male patients.35% patients had positive family history, mean IOP was 24.77 ± 4.27 mmHg, mean RNFL thickness was 71.89 ± 16.44 µm, mean vertical cup disc ratio was 0.62 ± 0.13, mean CCT was 509 ± 30.66 µm.
Conclusion –Risk factors were male gender, elderly age group, myopia and hypertension. Examination tools correlated the development of POAG were RNFL loss and large vertical CDR. The ‘opportunistic screening’ of population with these high risk factors will help in early diagnosis and treatment of POAG.
