Use of Accommodative IOLs during phaco can give us some accommodation post operatively. But we have noticed that even non-accommodative IOLs do give some diopter of accommodation after phaco surgery. In this study, 45 cases of cataracts (mean age 62 yrs-range from 51 to 81 yrs) were implanted with different types of non-accommodative monofocal foldable IOLs. At one month post op., all patients were examined for spectacle correction for distant and near vision. Near vision was examined with minimum addition and maximum addition of (+) lenses. The difference was recorded which suggests that these patients could accommodate to some extent. We observed that in pts between 50 to 60 yrs, mean pseudoaccommodation was +0.80D, between 61 to 70 yrs it was +0.65D & above 70 yrs it was +0.56D. However. in 7 eyes of pts under 60 yrs, it was +1.0D & above. Though it is a small and short study, but it answers to some extent why some pseudophakic patients do not need separate glasses for near vision.
