FP1153 : DESTRUCTIVE EYE SURGERIES AS AN INDICATOR OF SOCIOECONOMIC STATUS IN SOUTH INDIA

INTRODUCTION:Several socioeconomic factors contribute to advanced stage of disease presentation due to delay in seeking health care facilities, ignorance about early signs, illiteracy, poverty.

AIM:To relate the severity of the disease to the socioeconomic status.

METHOD:Retrospective study along with histopathology between 2008-2018

RESULTS:56 cases were operated for either EXTENDED ENUCLEATION (37) or EXENTERATION (19) for tumor of eyelids, conjunctiva and lacrimal gland. 25 M and 31 F patients were operated with MEAN AGE(in years) 57.05+_ 13.90 with mean age of M as 55.20+_12.803 and F as 58.54+_14.43 with majority of cases between 51-60 years of age(32.14%). Literacy rate overall 17.85%. Employment status as 28.57%. Average monthly income Rs.6500/-.Mean duration of presentation is 6.98 months.Average kms to reach higher center is 325.481 kms.

CONCLUSION:Low Socioeconomic status negatively affects disease extent and ocular outcome in spite of tumor BEING VISIBLE ON EYE SURFACE.
